Please research this product before you waste your money. At first glance the SPOT2 seems like a great product, emergency rescue, tracking, custom messages, etc., but don't believe the marketing. The device is unreliable, the customer service is poor, plus there's always the surprise renewal fee of $162.00. My SPOT2 functioned intermittently in the best of conditions, always giving the OK signal, but many messages would not be received. This is not an isolated incident, believe all the other negative product reviews. I would not want to rely upon a SPOT2 in an emergency. Again, don't waste your money.

I used mine hiking in the US and the island state of Tasmania in Australia. Most of my use was within the walls of the Grand Canyon while rafting down the Colorado. Worked nearly every time, including amongst steep walls where the sat phone wouldn't work at all. Liked it so much (and so did my wife, who was able to not only track my progress but know I was safe) that I got the new Spot Connect. Don't know what the other fellow had problems with, but mine worked like a charm for years, and posted my coords on my Facebook page to boot. No worries there. Customer service and website are a bit clunky, but the product works great.

I bought this spot in 2010 for a weather balloon launch. I tested the model out after having a few minor difficulties getting to transport information to the website. But after letting it attach it worked fine after many different successes.
Launch 1: The tracking was right on, after 60k feet it stopped communications (FAA rules) and when the balloon popped it came back down it relayed one time at 30k, and then 1 hour later on the floor of a forest with no sky view. It sent 20 location spots before finding it. Worked great! (Oh yeah, this was inside a styrofoam cooler 1" thick)
Launch 2: Same deal, up to 60k feet worked great, stopped and when it came back down it relayed it's location 2 hours after coming down in a forest with no visible sight to the sky and upside down. So other then the 2 hours trying to get back it's signal I recovered fine. $800 worth of camera equipment recovered. Thanks SPOT.
