Having this system on our dog has given us the peace of mind to let him be off leash. While he mostly comes when called, it is often hard to spot him in the sage brush and forest and one quick look at the GPS unit lets us know if he is far and we need to call him, and which direction to look for him in. At first the DC 40 seemed large around his neck (he is 45 pounds) but he seems oblivious to it and can't wait for us to put in on him as he knows he will get to run amok in the woods.
It does take a few minutes sometimes for the satellites to capture and this can only be done outside. The GPS is quite intuitive and with the manual one realizes how many other functions there are.
We purchased a hunter's map of our state which give the most detail in terms of property we are on (publice versus private and so on).
The Astro has literally changed our lives and allows... Read more

I hunt moose, boar, brown bear with dog-Laika. Birds, capercaille, black cook with enlish pointers. My Astro works well with all my dogs.
0 of 1 people found the following review helpful Dissapointing Range for Garmin Astro 220 and DC-30 Collar, November 26, 2010 By This review is from: Garmin Astro 220 Dog Tracking Collar Bundle +DC40 DC-40 (Electronics) We used the Garmin Dog Tracker on the deer hunt in Ontario( we can legally hunt deer with hounds) the first week of November. The terrain is open hardwoods and rolling hills. The longest tracking we got was just under one mile (1.46 kms) which is a far cry from the product claims. I can't see this product working during the summer months with full leaf coverage. We also have a lot of cedar swamps which would cut GPS transmission at any time.
On the positive side the unit does work in it's limited range. Deer hounds tend to range a lot further than one mile, especially if they get out of the hunting area. Garmin Astro Dog Tracking System - GPS receiver - hiking
